• Does Dr. Kass only work with athletes?

No, while Dr. Kass has a specific expertise in sports psychiatry, he also really enjoys working with non-athlete clients. He has extensive training in general adult psychiatry and is happy to work with adults with a wide range of psychiatric concerns.

  • I’m interested in becoming a new patient, what do I have to do?

Dr. Kass offers all prospective patients a free 15-minute phone consultation to learn more about them and to see if he is a good fit for what they’re looking for. Please contact us via this website to request a preliminary screening. After the phone screen, we can schedule your initial visits.

  • What is an initial visit like?

Since you’re more than just a constellation of symptoms, you need enough time to tell your whole story so that Dr. Kass can accurately formulate what’s going on and create optimal treatment recommendations. Initial visits occur over two 60-minute sessions in consecutive weeks. The first week will be a chance for Dr. Kass to gather as much information about you as possible so that he understands why you’re coming in and what your goals are. Between the visits, he will speak to any people you think could provide helpful information (ie. partners, parents, old therapists/psychiatrists, etc) and review medical records to further formulate your case and create a tailored treatment plan that fits your needs. During the 2nd visit, Dr. Kass will review what we talked about the previous week, discuss his diagnostic formulation, educate you on your diagnosis and symptoms, and review his treatment recommendations.

  • What types of follow up appointments do you offer?

We tailor appointment duration and frequency to meet the needs and goals of our patients. In general, Dr. Kass sees patients for 50 minute talk therapy, 45 minute medication management, and 25 minute medication management appointments.

  • Do you take insurance?

Unfortunately, insurance companies often create rigid contracts that force psychiatrists to offer only short medication management appointments. Since Dr. Kass believes effective treatment depends on a combination of collaborative conversations, talk therapy, psychoeducation, and medication treatment, he don’t feel he can effectively care for patients with these restrictions. In order to provide holistic, individualized, and optimal care, we do not contract with insurance companies and work as an “out of network provider.”

  • Will you provide documentation that I can submit to my insurance provider?

Absolutely, you can always request a receipt to submit to your PPO or Health Savings Account (HSA).

  • How much do sessions cost?

The price of sessions varies depending on the length of your appointment and whether we’re doing medication management, talk therapy, or both. If you are curious about the cost of specific session types, please contact us through this website or call 858-208-3595.

  • Do you offer video visits?

Yes, we use a HIPAA compliant, encrypted video program to perform video visits with patients. To keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, we're currently only doing video visits. As the pandemic improves and it becomes safe to do office visits again, we will offer all patients the option of returning to in-office visits.
