No, while Dr. Kass has a specific expertise in sports psychiatry, he also really enjoys working with non-athlete clients. He has extensive training in general adult and adolescent psychiatry and is happy to work with clients who have a wide range of psychiatric concerns.
The initial visit is Dr. Kass’s first chance to get to know you and learn about your goals for treatment. These visits generally take 90-120 minutes so that Dr. Kass has time to get to know you, understand your concerns, and formulate a comprehensive set of treatment recommendations. At the end of your initial visit, Kass will provide a set of recommendations that he feels will best help you reach your mental health goals. If Dr. Kass doesn’t feel he’s the best fit for helping you reach those goals, he will provide you with additional referrals and resources.
We tailor appointment duration and frequency to meet the needs and goals of our patients. In general, Dr. Kass sees patients for 90-120 minute initial evaluations and 25 or 45 minute follow ups.
Insurance companies often create rigid contracts that force psychiatrists to schedule brief, infrequent appointments. Since Dr. Kass believes effective, individualized treatment depends on a combination of collaborative conversations, talk therapy, psychoeducation, and medication treatment, and that he cannot effectively care for clients with the restrictions imposed by insurance companies. In order to provide holistic, individualized, and optimal care, Dr. Kass does not contract with insurance companies and works as an “out of network provider.”

Unlike adults, adolescents have a lot of people involved in their care (parents, siblings, teachers, coaches, etc). To provide the best care possible, Dr. Kass will request permission to speak to and collaborate with all the individuals involved in your adolescent’s life. The higher appointment fee allows Dr. Kass to block time in his schedule between sessions to have these important conversations and create the best individualized treatment plan for your child.
